A heart-pounding moment in the wild Arctic. This mother polar bear and her cub came within 200 feet of our ship—running full speed across the ice, fleeing from a large male in pursuit. In the polar bear world, males will often kill cubs that aren’t their own to pass on their lineage, a harsh but natural part of their survival strategy.
As a wildlife photographer, it’s not always easy to watch moments like this unfold. You understand the balance of the wild, but your heart still races. I’m grateful to say this brave mother and her cub escaped safely. A powerful reminder of both the beauty and brutality of life in the Arctic.
