This big male had no intention of sharing his prize. Having already dominated another polar bear to claim more than his fair share of a walrus carcass, he stood ready to defend it at all costs. We captured this moment from a safe distance in our zodiac, but the experience was anything but distant, especially with the overpowering smell of the carcass drifting through the Arctic air. A raw, unforgettable encounter with the wild at its most primal.
